Energy: a green development in the Pas de Calais

Green houses are low energy consumption to emerge in the Pas-de-Calais, near Lens. These eco-friendly homes, unveiled by Valerie Letard, Secretary of State for Ecology and Sustainable Development, have been designed to meet the objectives set by the Grenelle Environment concerning the construction of buildings with low energy consumption.Patrick Leblanc, head of the project named “Villavenir”, says the green houses have been conducted to prove that “all construction trades had yet up after the Round Table” with the current techniques.

The environmental improvements achieved during the work have allowed these homes to qualify as BBC (Building low energy consumption) issued by the Grenelle of Environment. To receive this label, the houses must meet certain criteria for energy consumption. For example, the consumption of heating, hot water and electricity must be 50 kWh per square meter per year.This figure is then multiplied by a coefficient that takes account of local climatic conditions.

Green Homes: a significant reduction in energy consumption

Covering an area of 87-100 square meters, these houses at low energy consumption are all equipped with photovoltaic panels or solar thermal that produce electricity and hot water. Patrick Leblanc, project manager, explains that the real charm of these homes to low-energy resides in the alveolar walls of brick or wood of larch.Their depth of 30-40 cm can retain heat within the housing thereby making unnecessary the installation of radiators, even in the north. Although the acquisition cost is 8-13% higher than a conventional house, reducing electricity consumption can quickly absorb the additional investment.
